試験の様子

場所：首都大学東京　南大沢キャンパス

時間：10:30集合、11:20移動、11：30本番開始。

試験官は、ネイティブの男性(40代?)、日本人女性(40代?)の2名。

質問内容

（以下、J：日本人試験官、N：ネイティブ試験官、A：受験者）

A: (ドアをノックして) Good morning.

N＆J: Good morning. (お二人とも満面の笑みで迎えてくれる)

A: May I put my bag here? (荷物置き場の前にて)

J: Yes, sure.

N: May I have your name?

A: My name is ...

N: Let me ask you a few questions about Japan. Please tell me about a climate of Japan.

A: Japan extends from north to south, so the climate differs region to region. However basically it is hot and humid in summer, on the contrary it is dry and cold in winter and in spring and autumn it is very comfortable.

N: What is your favorite season?

A: Actually I was born in autumn, so I like autumn the best. And it is famous for a harvest season, so you can enjoy seasonal foods such as fresh saury, bonito, chestnuts and various kinds of mushrooms. (途中から早口になってしまい、落ち着こうと気持ちを切り替える)

N: Sounds great. Then I will ask about the Japanese history.（トピックを変えますよという感じのコメントを伝えて下さってから）

Why are there so many temples in Kamakura?

A: (まずは鎌倉幕府から説明…と思い、話を進める) Kamakura is famous as a city where the first military government was established called Kamakura-bakufu around 12th century. So there are many historical relics including Buddhist temples and Shrines. Especially the head of the military government conserve the Buddhism, so there are many Zen Buddhist temples in Kamakura.（途中で鎌倉は禅寺が多いことを添えようと、最後の最後でZen Buddhist templeに触れるが…、説明不十分だよなと気にしつつも、面接はどんどん次に進んでいく…）

N: How is the Japanese prime minister elected?

A: I'm sorry, I beg your pardon? (一瞬に話題ががらりと変わり、ちょっと動揺。そして、念のため質問内容を再度確認)

N: In America, Mr. Obama was elected in this presidential election, so I wonder how the prime minister is elected in Japan.

A: The Japanese prime minister is elected at the Diet by the Upper house and Lower House. And the prime minister is appointed by the Emperor. (正直言ってあまり自信がなく、短く回答)

N: Is there a certain term? (ちょっとあいまいですが、期間は決まっているのか?というような質問でした)

A: Yes. There is a certain term for your years. The former prime minister, Mr. Koizumi worked full term for four years, but another former prime ministers such as Mr. Abe and Mr. Fukuda resigned due to some problems such as a health problem and a….kind of controversial thing…(ここで福田首相の辞任理由がうまく伝えられず、とまどう)

N: I see, it’s a controversial matter. (なんとなくこちらのニュアンスをくみ取っていただいた感じであるが、微妙な終わり方) O.K. Thank you very much.

(ここでJが会釈で試験終了の合図。)

A: Thank you very much. (部屋を出るとき会釈して｢ありがとうございました。失礼いたします｣と日本語で述べた。)

試験を終えて

あっという間に試験時間が過ぎました。8分弱のような印象です。面接官お二人とも終始にこやかで、ネイティブの方のみ質問をされました。

今回は、｢笑顔｣｢gesture｣｢eye contact｣を常に心がけて面接を受けました。日本の気候は、自信を持って答えられましたが、鎌倉のお寺の話題は、もっと話を膨らます余裕が必要だったように思います。また、政治の質問に関しては少々意外でしたが、CELの直前クラスで、日本の首相に関連した質問を受けていたので、全く答えられないという状況は免れました。しかし、自分の考えをもう少し添えながら、まとめられたらよかったと、今振り返りながら感じているところです。

今年の面接は、比較的ベーシックな内容の観光や日本文化などの質問に加え、政治やさらに掘り下げられた文化に関する質問がされたようです。しかし、実際のところCELのmock interviewでも、かなり手強い質問もあったため、そういったトレーニングが本試験に対して実践的でもあり、試験に大変役に立ったと実感しています。ありがとうございました。
