"I was impressed." "It was better than I'd expected."

It was better than I’d expected.

Y: So, Hiro, how was your weekend?

H: Great! I went to a hot spring resort in the Tohoku Region, and I stayed at a ryokan, a Japanese-style inn.

Y: Sounds nice!

H: I was really impressed by the facilities, food, views from the room, and of course the outdoor hot spring bath — everything was far better than I’d expected.

Y: Really? My friend and I were just talking about taking a trip to somewhere next weekend. Now I definitely want to stay at that inn! Can you tell me which inn you stayed at? I’ll check it out if there’s any vacancy left!

H: No problem. Here’s its brochure. It’s a very popular inn, so if you make a reservation, the sooner, the better!

Y: Thank you for your advice!

I was really impressed by~、と言いましたね。

Y: I was impressed by your speech. Everything was far better than I’d expected.

expectしていたのは、far betterだと気が付くよりも前のことですから、thanの後は、過去完了になって、than I had expected、省略形にして、than I’d expectedとなります。

Y: It was more crowded than I’d expected.

I’ll check it out. 「早いに越したことはない」 The sooner, the better.

Y: By the way, Hiro, I wonder if there’s any definition of hot springs in Japan.

H: Oh, there is. According to the law, any spring water with the temperature of over 25 degrees Celsius or that containing a certain amount of one or more specific substances is called a hot spring.

Y: I see. So, even the cold spring water can be called a hot spring as long as it meets the conditions.

H: That’s right.

I see... (なるほど) Well, I wonder if we can go to the inn you stayed at by train as well.

H: OK, I’ll check it out for you.

Y: Thanks! If so, the sooner, the better! We wanna reserve their best room available!
