Y: Now Hiro, what’s today’s topic? H: Well today, let’s talk about a traditional event held in November, which is called shichi-go-san. Y: Sounds interesting. H: Shichi-go-san literally means the seven-five-three festival held around November 15th. Parents take their three-year old boys and girls, five-year old boys, and seven year-old girls to a local shrine to pray for their safe and healthy future. Y: Yes. And the children are often dressed in fancy clothes, including kimonos. I have a photo taken at my shichi-go-san when I was three. In the photo, I was wearing a colorful kimono with a huge smile, but my parents told me at first I refused to put it on. H: Oh? How did they persuade you? Y: They told me only those in a kimono could get a chitose-ame, a long stick candy. H: So your parents’ gambit worked! Y: They’re often dressed in fancy clothes, including kimonos. In the photo, I was wearing a colorful kimono with a huge smile. I wear a kimono at least once a week. My parents told me at first I refused to put it on. itを目的語に取る場合、put it onの語順しか使えませんが、put a kimono onのように、itではなく普通の名詞を目的語に取る場合、put on a kimonoの語順でもOKです。 It’s difficult to put on a kimono. H: But didn’t you see some other kids in Western clothes having a chitose-ame, too? Y: Well, I really took to my kimono, and forgot about that! But, I just wonder why seven, three and five? H: Well, in Japan the odd numbers are thought to be auspicious, having some kind of power, because they can’t be split. Also, in the old days, the infant death rate was very high — many children died before reaching the age of seven. Y: So, the ritual is also to celebrate their healthy growth. H: You’re right.(その通りだね)由美ちゃんは着物を着てみたら、すぐに気に入ってしまって千歳飴のことなんてどうでもよくなっちゃったんだね。 |
