H: 今日は、have something to do with~、「~と何か関係がある」という表現を扱ってみましょうか。 Well, Hiro, next week we’ll have a national holiday called Labor Thanksgiving Day. Does it have something to do with a traditional event? H: Yes, it does. Since ancient times, it has been the day for a court ceremony called nii-name-sai, in which the Emperor offers the new harvest to Shinto deities. In fact, up until 1947, the day was celebrated as a national holiday under that name. Y: Why was the name changed? H: Well, after World War II, under the policy of separation of religion and politics, court rituals based on Shinto rites were separated from legal national holidays. Y: I see. So, today as a national holiday, Labor Thanksgiving Day has nothing to do with religion. H: You’re right.(その通り) さて最初の由美ちゃんの質問に出てきましたよね。 Does it have something to do with a traditional event? Y: have something to do with~は、somethingの部分を他の単語に置き換えて使えますよね。 Y: The Japanese love of nature has a lot to do with Shinto ideas. Today as a national holiday, Labor Thanksgiving Day has nothing to do with religion. Y: By the way, Hiro, does Labor Thanksgiving Day in Japan have something to do with Thanksgiving Day in America? H: No, it doesn’t. It has nothing to do with Turkey, either. Y: Well, then, where did its English name come from? H: Well, the name was given by the US occupation forces. Its original nature is close to Thanksgiving Day, but its definition as a national holiday is closer to Labor Day in America. So they mixed the names of the two days. The Japanese name is just a translation! Y: How interesting!(面白いわね!) H: You know, Yumiko, I was once asked by a foreign co-worker why we have to work on Labor Thanksgiving Day. Y: Well, how did you answer? H: Well, I said, “We also need to give thanks to being employed!” |
