試験の様子

試験会場は福岡、集合時間は午後1時20分。

The gathering time was 1:20 p.m. After brief instructions, all the examinees were divided into groups of three people each. Each group was told by the supervisor to wait for his/her turn in front of the interview room. My turn came around 1:45 p.m.

When I entered the room, there were only two examiners. One is a male native speaker; and the other is a female Japanese, who must be an interpreter guide. The Japanese examiner instructed me in English to put my personal belongings on the desk in the back.

The native examiner was speaking fast throughout the interview.

質問内容

(以下、J:日本人試験官、N:ネイティブ試験官、A:受験者)

J: May I have your name?

A: My name is ... In my first name, ... means ... My parents gave me the name wishing me to ...

J: Where do you live?

A: I live in ... ... is famous for ...

N: It is great that your parents gave you that name.

(受験者の名前についてNとAの間でしばらくやり取り)

N: Okay. Now let’s go to the first question. The weather of Japan...um, what is the rainy season in Japan like?

A: The rainy season is observed in June. In Fukuoka, we have a lot of rain. Sometimes Fukuoka City suffers from flood.

N: But the rainy season is not limited to Fukuoka. It is seen all over Japan.

A: Ah, yes, the rainy season is seen throughout Japan, except for Hokkaido. After June is over, it is hot and humid summer.

N: I see. Well, we move on to the history. How did Japan modernize after the Meiji Restoration?

A: Japan modernized by hiring a lot of people from overseas called “oyatoi gaikokujin,” and Amane Nishi asked Japanese people to use Roman characters, saying that Chinese characters and Japanese characters were out of date.

N: But it did not penetrate into people.

A: Well, another example is that the Japanese government built a building called Rokumeikan. A lot of Japanese people... wealthy people enjoyed dancing there.

N: I see. Um, the next question. What is the difference between Shinto and Buddhism?

A: Shinto is an indigenous religion in Japan. Shinto is practiced at jinja, or shrine... (Here, trying to explain Buddhism, I repeated a phrase or sentence three times.) ...Uh, excuse me... Buddhism was imported from China via Korea. Buddhism was originated in India.

N: (toward the Japanese examiner) Okay, now let’s finish the oral exam.

J: This is the end of the interview. Thank you for coming today.

A: Thank you very much. I really enjoyed a lot. Arigatou Gozaimashita.
