J, N Hello, Good morning !

Thank you.(着席)

J: Well, how are you ?(Native

A: I feel a bit nervous, but I’m very happy to be here today, thank you.

J: (頷きながら笑顔で優しく)Take it easy! So, what is your name and where are you from?

A: My name is ..., I’m from ...

J: Chilly(微笑みつつ独り言風). Well, relax!

A: Yes, thank you.

N: I hear there are many hot springs in Japan. Why are there so many?

A: Yes, it’s because there are a lot of active volcanoes in Japan. So we have a lot of hot spring resorts.

N: Why is that? Why does Japan have such active volcanoes?

A: Well, because Japan is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

N: My friends recommend me that I go to an onsen, but I came to Japan only in this January, and haven’t had a chance to visit one. I think I’m going to visit one. Could you recommend a good hot spring nearby?

A: Well, how about going to Hakone? Hakone is very close to Tokyo and a very popular hot spring resort among also tourists.

N: I see. How can I go there? I live in Ikebukuro. How can I get there from Ikebukuro?

A: First, you go to Sinjuku, and then, take the Odakyu Line. You can get there less than 2 hours.

N: If I were to have more time, say, from Friday through Sunday, where would you recommend?

A: You should go to Chichibu. Actually, it’s much closer, but many temples and shrines there have special exhibitions of their treasures. You can enjoy them along with hot springs there. And you can also enjoy viewing beautifully colored autumn foliage there.

N: I go to onsen for the first time. Is there anything that I have to be careful about? I mean, there may be something that I shouldn’t do.

A: You don’t have to worry too much about it... Umm... you should wash your body first and then enter the bath tub. But everybody must be enjoying themselves, so it’s OK.(何だか無理矢理終らせた感じで、少し怪訝そうな顔つき。) Your accommodation may have an outdoor bath or an extra big bath. So please wash before you jump in.

N: I go with my wife. Can we enjoy the same bath together? Or do we have to use separate baths?

A: Your accommodation may have a special extra bath which you can make a reservation and only use for you two, for a certain time.(日本人試験官頷く) If not, of course I think your room is also equipped with a small bath.

N: Oh, I see. Now history. Who is the last Shogun?

A: Um... I think it’s Yoshinobu, well the last shogun...let’s see... Yes, his name is Tokugawa Yoshinobu.

N: Then Meiji came, right?

A: Yes, the Meiji Restoration. Political change occurred.

N: When was it ? When did it happen?

A: It was in 1867.(と答え、Nativeがそのまま次の別の質問へ進もうとした様子を遮って慌てて訂正。) Oh, I mean the Edo Period ended in 1867 and the Meiji Restoration was in 1868, to be exact.

N: All right. I want go to Osaka to see my friends. How can I go there?

A: First, you go to Tokyo station, then take a bullet train. It takes within 3 hours to get to Osaka. (一瞬所要時間を間違った、と思い) Um, let’s see...but it depends on which bullet train you choose. (日本人試験官頷く) There’re three types of bullet trains to Osaka. The fastest of the three is Nozomi.

N: Nozomi? How to spell Nozomi?

A: N, O, (左の手のひらに指で書き確認しながら)Z, O, M, I.

N: (nozomiと実際に紙に書き留めていた) And the others?

A: They are Hikari and Kodama. (試験官笑顔で頷く)Well, Osaka is a lively city, and has a wide variety of dishes. You can absolutely enjoy meals there.(のちに、Nozomiとは「希望」の意で、とか話を広げるべきだったのではと思った。)

N: Oh, that’s great! So what do you recommend? Well then, that’s it. Thank you very much.
