試験の様子

13:30 集合、13:50移動、14:15本番開始。

試験官は、外国人の男性(アメリカ人のアクセントではなかったです。早口のイギリス人らしい40代後半)、日本人女性(30代?)の2名。

質問内容

質問内容

A: (ドアをノックして) Good morning. (Good afternoonというところを緊張のため、Good morningといってしまった)

J: Have a seat. What is your name?

A: My name is ...

J: Where do you live?

M: I live in Yokohama city, Kanagawa prefecture.

J: I see.

N: How did you get here?

A: I get on … Line from … Station to Shinagawa station then transfer to JR line.

N: How long did it take?

A: It took about one hour and a half.

N: Quite long distance.

A: Yes.

N: Suppose we are tourists and you are a tour guide. We are going to Meiji Shrine. Please tell me about Meiji Shrine.

A: Meiji Shrine is Shinto Shrine. It is the one of the largest shrine in Japan. It is the largest visitors coming on New Year's day in Japan.

N: Which shrine or temple do you go on New Year’s day?

A: I go to Kawasaki Daishi nearby Kawasaki Station. Kawasaki Daishi is the Buddhist Temple and it is the second largest visitors coming on New year’s day in Japan.

N: I am interested in Japanese gardens. I saw a lot of pebbles covered the grounds of the gardens. What do those pebbles for?

(英語はこの通りではなかったですが、Pebblesはどうして、日本庭園にあるとの質問内容でした。)

A: It’s a traditional Japanese garden’s design. Pebbles represent water.

(わからなかったので、枯山水の引用をしました。)

N: 　Oh, pebbles represent water.

I saw the people carry the portable shrine at the Japanese festival. What is that?

A: That is Mikoshi in Japanese. It is enshrined the deity. We use that at traditional Japanese festival.

N: The monk ring the bell 108 times on New Year’s Eve.

(この通りの質問ではなかったのですが、除夜の鐘で、108回打つのは何の意味というようなことを聞かれたと思います。)

A： 108 anxieties and desires. A human being naturally possess 108 anxieties and desires. They ring the bell 108 times to kept away those anxieties and desires. (鐘を打つジェスチャーを交えながら、説明)

(仏教では、人間は108の煩悩があるということを言ったつもりでしたが、仏教という単語を入れませんでした。)

N: What is the difference between Sake and Shochu?

A: Sake is fermented alcoholic drink. Shochu is distilled alchohokic drink. We drink sake either hot or cold. Shochu is mixed with hot water and also mixed with beverage such as soda, juice and tea.

N: Which is your favorite?

A: Actually, I don’t drink.

M: Neither do I. (ここで少し笑い)

N: What is the difference between Shinto and Buddhism?

A: Shinto is indigenous religion in Japan. It was originated in Japan. Buddhism was originated in India and brought to Japan via China and Korea.

N: Do they have one god?

A: Both Shinto and Buddhism have many gods.

N: Which period do you think most important?

A: I think Meiji Restoration is most important.

N: Why do you think so?

A: We imported Western culture. The industry was promoted. We tried to catch up the Western countries. A lot of political, economic, cultural changes were made.

N: Who is favorite person do you like in history?

A: I like Tokugawa Ieyasu.

N: Why?

A: Tokugawa Ieyasu was the first shogun of Tokugawa Shogunate. He was an hostage for 12 years to get freedom and get power. He conquered Japan and Tokugawa dynasty last about 250 years of peace. Today’s businessmen learn from his patience and respect him very much.

N: Why do you want to become a tour guide?

A: Well, I am interested in cultural exchange. I would like to tell foreigners Japanese culture. Japan has unique and beautiful culture. I also would like to clear up the misunderstanding what foreigners might have.

(ここでTime upのタイマーがなる)

N: One last question. What is your hobby?

A: I practice Yoga and Pilatis.

N: Interesting. Thank you very much.

A: Thank you very much.

J: ありがとうございました。

A: ありがとうございました。

試験を終えて

ほとんどが外国人試験官との面接でした。こもった声で早口で話すので、かなり早いテンポで会話が進みました。

最初のPebblesの意味が一瞬わからなかったりPebblesが日本庭園に何の意味であるのかわからなくて、あまりよくないスタートをしましたが、パニックに陥らず、できる限り答えました。除夜の鐘の煩悩もすこし、説明が足らなかったように思いますし、文法もあまり気にせず、話したので、どういう印象を持たれたかわかりません。

はっきり通る声でジェスチャーを交えて話したと思います。最初は笑顔で挨拶したのですが、予想もしない問題や、説明に窮したこともあり、内心動揺しまして笑顔を忘れがちになったことが悔やまれます。

服装は、ガイドとして、目立ちすぎないながらも、Professionalに見えるような清潔感のあるベージュのスーツを着ました。

CELでの思ってもみない質問になんとか沈黙をせずに、なにか発言するという訓練が役立っていると思います。
