J: May I have your name? Could you tell me where you live?

A: I live in Kawasaki, near Tokyo. (と言ったら)

N: So do you come from Kawasaki?

A: You mean where I was born?

N: Yes.

A: I was born in Hiroshima.

N: When you take some tourists to Meiji Shrine, what do you explain about it?

A: Meiji Shrine is located in Harajuku, near Harajuku St. It was built for the memorial shrine (良い言葉が思いうかばず…) of the Emperor Meiji. The Emperor of Meiji liked nature at lot, so there are abundant nature there in spite of the urban center. You can enjoy seeing a wide variety of trees and plants as well as visiting shrine.

N: Speaking of shrine, there are many small stones on the ground. Why do they …?

A: I don’t think I can answer completely, but when I went to a shrine, the priest told me, in ancient times, people soak their body in the river before visiting shrine for purification. Usually there are many stones on the bottom of the river, and people walked on the stones many times, there stones getting round in shape. Those stones remain as a today’s style. But this is one of the reasons.

N: Why do people bring? (どんな表現したのか…。担ぐのか?と聞かれたことは確か。) a portable shrine at festivals?

A: People considered festivals religious activities. So people walk around the town with a portable shrine to enlighten? a God, respect a God.

N: About temples, people ring a bell 108 times on the New Years Eve, why do they ring so many?

A: In Buddhism, people have 108 wants. (煩悩と言いたかった) Before welcoming a new year, people try to remove such wants.

N: What is the difference between sake & shochu?

A: Both are Japanese alcoholic drink. Sake is made from rice and mostly drunk straight. Shochu is made from various ingredients such as potato, sweet potato, rice, other vegetables. Usually mixed with hot water, tea, some kinds of juice.
