試験の様子

試験会場: 東洋学園大学　本郷キャンパス
試験時間: 16時半から
面接時間: 8分

受付時間の1時間前に到着したところ、時間にならないと建物内に入れないとのことで、周囲のカフェや軽食レストランを探すも休日の後楽園前ということもあってか混雑しており、建物前の日当たりの良い屋外で腰掛けて待機するはめに。

時間が来て受付を済ませると、控え室に入る。面接の順番が近づくと係員に呼ばれ、他の何人かと共に面接室の前まで移動し、廊下の椅子で待機。待機時間は面接2人分くらい。

試験官: 二人

主な質問者は30歳前後の米語を話すネイティブの男性で、もう一人は通訳ガイドの資格があると思われる40歳台日本人女性

ノックし、｢失礼します。Good afternoon.｣と入室すると、女性の方は無表情で脚を組み、夕方までの面接で既にうんざりしたような感じに見え、不安になる。一方、男性は快活な感じだったため少しほっとする。

荷物を教室の後ろに下げられている机に置き、座るように言われた後着席。とにかく笑顔、と再度自分に言い聞かせる。

質問内容

（以下、J：日本人試験官、N：ネイティブ試験官、A：受験者）

(完全な復元は不可能なので、だいたいこのようなQ&Aだったということで記します。私のぎこちない、ミス連発の英語を復元するのはたいへん恥ずかしいのですが。)

J: May I ask your name and where you live?

A: My name is …. I live in …, … Prefecture, next to Tokyo.

その後、男性に換わり、早速本質問へ。

N: How is Japanese economy?

A: (いきなり答えづらい質問だな、と困惑しながら)
I’m not sure about the economy, but for several years, Japanese economy has been in stagnant, and there was a big incident that American economical (financialの間違え) company collapsed, so Japanese economy is going down.

N: Do you think Mr. Aso do well about it?

A: I’m not sure.かI don’t think so. He may try to do many things, but I’m not sure about the aim or purpose from his opinion.

N: I want to visit a Japanese traditional garden. Which garden do you recommend?

A: (観光の方に話題が移りほっとしながら) If you stay around Kyoto, I’d recommend Ryoan-ji temple. Its garden is very famous. The style of the garden is Karesansui garden or rock and sand garden. The interesting thing of the garden is that there are 15 stones, but from any angles you cannot see all of 15 stones.

N: Why 15 stones?

A: I’m not sure of the details, but I heard the garden means the cosmos. You cannot see one stone from any angles. That means there’s no perfect thing in the cosmos.

N: Yeah, that may be true.

How about around here? I won’t visit Kyoto. How about Tokyo?

A: In that case, I’d recommend Rikugien or Rikugi park (gardenの方が良かったか) in Bunkyo ward, near here. The style of the garden is Tsukuyama garden. The elements are pond, stone, trees and some flowers. On the contrary to Karesansui garden, the garden is greenery. You can stroll along the path and enjoy Japanese traditional garden.

N: You are on a bus. You are a tourist leader of a large group. There are many people from Iran, XXX, YYY…. There was a car accident and the bus doesn’t move. Everyone gets tired. What will you do?

A: I will start karaoke. Now karaoke is world-famous, so everyone may enjoy. I will prepare many (a lot ofとすべき) music in (onとすべき) a CD or a tape for long travel.

N: There is a crazy guy and he wants to smoke. They can’t smoke in a bus. He says, “the bus doesn’t move for 30 minutes.” and insists on smoking. What will you do?

A: The rule is rule. I will try to tell him not to smoke. I won’t allow him to smoke.

N: (文句を言って煙草を吸いたいと主張する客を表現)

A: (食い下がるなあ、と内心冷や汗。笑顔も引きつり状態。) In that case, I will ask all of the customers (passengersとすべき) and get a consensus if he can smoke or not. (if they agree letting him smokeなどの方が良いと、後日イギリス人の知人に言われた。) If I can get a consensus from all of them, I will allow him (混乱してthemなどと口走っていた記憶も) to smoke. But I cannot get a consensus, I will tell him about it, like, “you know, everyone doesn’t like the smoke.” I will try to request him not to smoke.

N: Ok. Thank you very much.

J: Thank you very much.

A: 何とか無理やり笑顔を作りながら、｢Thank you very much.ありがとうございました。｣と退出。

試験を終えて

その後は帰ってよいと指示があるまで控え室で待機。この間に面接内容を書き出して復元してみる。結果は微妙だな、と、試験からの解放感に晴れない気分が混在しながら帰宅。

以上が私の2次試験内容です。従って、合格発表で自分の名前を見つけた時は喜びとともに驚きも大きかったです。
