■第1回：英文和訳から英文読解へ頭から英語を理解してみましょう！それでは、具体的にパラグラフ単位で英文を見ながら、英文和訳ではない英文解釈のやり方を一緒に考えていきましょう。 Hidden in the mountains of Mexico’s largely desolate Baja California peninsula, which extends 700 miles south of the U.S. border, are about 600 caves and cliffs where prehistoric native Americans painted impressive murals. Collectively called the Great Mural Paintings, these sites comprise the most fascinating collection of prehistoric art in the Americas. まず、この英文をふつうに朗読してみてください。どのくらいかかるでしょうか。30秒ほどではないでしょうか。ということは上述しましたように、この英文を黙読で読解する場合も、30秒以内で読んで理解しなければ、「英語を読んだ」とは言えないことになります。いかがでしたでしょうか？ さて次に、肝心の英文解釈です。何度も繰り返しますが、「頭から理解して行く」ことです。そのために、便利なのが「スラッシュ方式」です。下記のように、英文の「意味のかたまり」ごとにスラッシュで区切っていく方法で、読者諸兄の多くはすでにご存じかと思いますが、これを徹底してやるのです。 Hidden in the mountains / of Mexico’s largely desolate Baja California peninsula, / which extends 700 miles / south of the U.S. border, / are about 600 caves and cliffs / where prehistoric native Americans / painted impressive murals. / Collectively called the Great Mural Paintings, / these sites comprise / the most fascinating collection / of prehistoric art in the Americas. / The murals, / which researchers estimate / to be 3,600 years old, / remained largely unnoticed and unrecorded / until recently. このように区切れたら、あとは単語の意味さえわかっていれば、英文の解釈はできたも同然です。実際に読む場合には、もちろんこのスラッシュは、鉛筆を使ってつけるのではなく、頭の中でつけるわけです。 以下が、頭から読んでいった場合の大意です。 「山に隠れているものがある／その山は、荒涼とした景色の広がるメキシコのバハカリフォルニア半島にある／その半島は、700マイル延びている／アメリカ国境の南に。／その隠れているものとは、約600の洞穴や絶壁である／そこには、有史以前の土着アメリカ人が／描いた鮮やかな壁画が残っている。／ひとまとめにして「大壁画群」と呼ばれている／これらの史蹟は、／最も驚嘆すべき作品である／アメリカ大陸の有史以前の芸術の中で。／この壁画は、／研究者の試算によると／3,600 年前のもので、／そのほとんどが未発見で記録もないままであった／つい最近まで。」 このパラグラフの主旨は、これで完璧に理解できるはずです。これが「英文読解」です。そして、これを「正しい日本語」にするのが、いわゆる「英文和訳」で、さらに「こなれた美しい日本語」にするのが「翻訳」です。「英文和訳」と「翻訳」のためには、当然語順と日本語表現を換えていく必要があります。「英文読解」する際には、そのような「英文和訳」や「翻訳」をたとえ頭の中でもする必要がないのです。何度も繰り返しますが、朗読より速く、黙読できなければいけないからです。 それでは、30秒ほどで朗読できるパラグラフをもう1つ見てみましょう。 One definition of “culture” is behavior that is learned through social contact with one’s group. For a long time, scientists thought that culture in this sense was unique to human beings. Animal behavior, they believed, was determined by instinct rather than learned. Since the 1980s, however, most specialists have come to accept that chimpanzees, man’s closest relative among animals, also show culturally based behavior.
