■第３回：英語を「書く」～英作文から英借文へMODEL ANSWERAt some point in all of our lives, we must consider which career to pursue. This essay will touch on some of the factors to consider when choosing a career. The first thing many people look at is earning potential. Naturally, certain jobs pay better than others. Usually, the better paying jobs require a university education and provide one with a higher social status. Income may also be affected by the economic prospects of the company as well as overall economic trends. Since Japan is an aging society, careers in health care may be a good choice - a pharmaceutical company for example. Another important factor in choosing a career is job satisfaction. If we enjoy our work or somehow feel a sense of accomplishment with our work, we will lead happier lives. We sometimes hear about people in demanding and high-paying jobs who give it all up in order to spend more time with their families. Obviously, they were not satisfied with how their jobs were affecting their lives. Choosing a career is a difficult thing to do. It is important to carefully look at these factors when making this important decision. さて、いかがでしたでしょうか。 自由度の高いエッセーですので、唯一絶対の解答はありません。明確な論理展開と正確かつ簡潔な英語で書いてあれば、少なくとも合格点は楽々取れるはずです。 注目すべきは、POINTSで挙げられている語彙が、いずれも英字新聞や雑誌などのマスコミで頻繁に出て来る表現であることです。すなわち、このPOINTSを見れば、careerに関する内容で、以前に英字新聞雑誌や英語放送で接した英語／英文が想起され、論理展開もそれにならって作成していけば、それほど苦労せずにエッセーが書けることです。つまり、この英検１級１次試験の新エッセー問題は、まさしく「英借文」を目指しているものだと言えましょう。従いまして、MODEL ANSWERの文中にも、POINTSの語彙に加えて、”touch on” “aging society” “high-paying job”などの現代英語頻出表現を使用して、英文にパンチを持たせてあることにお気付きいただけましたでしょうか。 以上、「英語を書く」能力は、実はふだんからいかに英語を読み／聴きしているかに左右されることを、「英借文」の概念で詳しくご説明いたしました。 いま一度、強調いたします。「英語を書く」能力を向上しようとお思いの方は、とにかく英語を読み／聴く量を増やすようになさってみてください。それを続けていけば、ある時期が来ると英語を書くことに格段に自信が持てるようになっていることに、驚き感激することでしょう。筆者もそうでした。 Read more and listen more！ さて、いかがでしたでしょうか。 |
