N: Good morning. Sit down, please.
A: Good morning. Thank you.
N: Please tell us your name and where you are from.
A: My name is ... I am originally from ... But I am now living in Chiba city.
N: How do you feel now?
A: I am very nervous. （笑いながら）
N, J: （大笑いしながら） Why?
（Whyといわれても…、どう答えようか考えようとしたら、すぐ本題に入る質問になったので、笑って終わったという感じ。）
N: I’d like to start my question. About Japanese history.（ambiguous questionだなあ、どう答えようかと思ったら、すぐに質問が続いた） Samurai. We, as a foreigner came from England, think Samurai people are still in Japan, like we see in a Japanese movie. Can we see Samurai in Japan now?
A: No, we can’t see Samurai anymore. Corporate workers may be modern day Samurai who work very hard and sacrifice themselves for the good of the company. But Samurai lost their status after the Meiji Restoration in 1868. Samurai started from the late 12th century and through to the mid-19th century. （武士政権はともかく、侍はもっと前からいたなあと思いながら、まあいいか、と思う。）
N: It’s interesting. Next question is ... I’d like to go skiing. Where do you recommend me go?
A: I would recommend two places. One is Nagano. It will take two hours to get there by train from Tokyo. We had a Winter Olympics there in 1998. They have many good facilities. Another is Hokkaido, northern part of Japan. Sapporo, a big city there, hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics. And they also have good facilities. In addition, their snow is “powder snow”, so skiers can enjoy it.
N: I see. It’s good. Can I rent skiis and other things?（と言いながら、ウェアのことをジェスチャで言っているようなので）
A: Yes, I think they can provide everything.
N: I...big... （自分がかなり大男であることを言いたいらしかった、 笑いながら…）
A: Yes, I think they have a bigger one. （笑いながらの話になった。）
N: My wife has no skiing experiences. What do you think ?
A: They have a kind of ski schools, so your wife can also enjoy skiing there.
N: It’s good, OK. After this, I’d like to go to Osaka from here to see my friend. How can I go ?
A: I would recommend to take the Shinkansen, or Bullet train, from Tokyo station. It wil take about two and half hours. You can take an airplane, but it will take much time to get to the air port and ...in the air port it takes much time. （手続きを考えるとかえって余計な時間がかかることを説明しようとして、すっきりした英語が出てこない。）
N: How much does it take to Osaka? （と質問してくれたので、そっちに答えを切り替えた。）
A: It wil take about a hundred dollars. （よく行っている名古屋までの金額を言ってしまった、まずい！）
A: Sorry! A little more ! （150＄ぐらいと言いなおそうとしたが、大笑いになっていて、A little more than that. と繰り返しただけで終わってしまった。）
N, J: （顔を見合わせてうなずいて） Thank you very much.
A: Thank you. （と、笑いながら終わってしまった。本番では、なかなかうまく行かないと反省しながら退出。最後にもう一度挨拶するかなあと振り返ったら、もう二人は一生懸命何かを書いている途中なので、そのまま退出。午前の最後の面接だったようだ。）
