質問内容

(以下、J:日本人試験官、N:ネイティブ試験官、A:受験者)

N: What is your name and where are you from?

A: My name is ... I am from... Tokyo. It takes only 30 minutes from here.

N: Oh! Perfect! I would like to start my question. Please tell me about Japanese weather this year.

A: I think this year is pretty warm compared with the last year. It is partly because of global warming. But it is said that it will be very cold in winter.

N: Could you explain the whole weather?

A: You mean the whole weather this year including spring and summer?

N: Yes, please.

A: In spring this year we enjoyed nice warm weather, but summer was terribly hot. So we had a bad time in the summer. The beginning of the fall was very warm so I couldn't feel it was fall. But recently it is cold so we can feel it is fall now.

N: Like today?

A: Yes, exactly.

N: Oh, excellent. Next question. Japan is an island country. What kind of fish can you catch around Japan?

A: We can catch many kinds of fish such as tuna, cod, mackerel, and so on.

N: Oh, so many fish. Which do you like best?

A: I like tuna.

N: How do you cook?

A: I eat raw tuna or sometimes I bake it and flavor it with say sauce and sake.

N: That's nice. About Japanese history. Would you explain the Meiji Restoration? How did it change Japan?

A: It drastically changed Japan in many ways. For instance, during the Edo period Japan was closed to foreign countries because of the isolation policy. However, owing to the Meiji Restoration, Japan opened the door to the other countries and began to have diplomatic relations and started to trade with foreign countries. And also Japanese citizens were divided into 4 rankings during the Edo period but Japan abolished the system and then all citizens became equal.

N: So it was a big change. Excellent! I am thinking about going to study Japanese writing. Please tell me about the Japanese writing system.

A: There are three types of writing. Kanji, Kana, Katakana. Kanji is a Chinese character. For instance Yama (指で大きく書く)which means "a mountain" in English. There are two ways of reading. On and Kun or Chinese way and Japanese way. When we read it yama, this is a Japanese way and when we read it san, this is a Chinese way. Kana is cursive and phonetic. So it shows pronunciation. If you can read kana, you can pronounce Japanese.

N: How about Katakana?

A: Katakana is the square form of kana which is used to express words from foreign language. For instance, bottle, we write botoru in katakana. (ペットボトルが机の上にあった。)

N: Excellent. I want to write Japanese. Thank you very much. I really had a good time. It's nice to meet you.

A: Thank you very much. ありがとうございました。
