試験の様子

入室すると、試験官（２名、外国人女性、年配の日本人男性）がおり、受験者側から見て正面右側に外国人女性、左側に日本人男性（JNTOの職員らしき年配の人物）が正対して座り、質疑応答を行う形式。

質問内容

（以下、J：日本人試験官、N：ネイティブ試験官、A：受験者）

A: Hello. It’s very nice to meet you.

N: Hello. Me, too.

J: Your name and address, please?

A: My name is ... My address is...

N: I’m much interested in electronics. Which shop in Akihabara do you recommend?

A: Well, there are many well-known electronic appliance shops in Akihabara, but I recommend you to visit small, not well-known shops near the street. Because such shops are dealing with high performance electronic appliances, so you visit there. But if you want to buy cheaper one, I recommend you to visit well-known electronic appliance shop such as Kojima etc.

N: I’m worried such shop employees can speak English. What do you think?

A: I think many employees in Akihabara aren’t good at speaking English.

N: Oh, it’s annoying.

A: But don’t worry about it. In the specific field including electronics, even if they can’t speak English fluently, we can exchange views enough. For example, I’m a research engineer, but even with my inadequate English skills, I always exchange views on my research issue with foreign engineers. Don’t worry.

N: OK. There are many earthquakes in Japan. If I were struck by an earthquake, what should I do?

A: If you were in a large city such as Tokyo, Osaka and others, you should go out of the building, and not walk around there. The Self Defense Forces will come to rescue, so you should go to the public official space such as Showa women’s Univ. or Setagaya-park etc. and wait to the SDF or the police to arrive there.

N: OK. What’s the season for typhoon to hit Japan?

A: In the Honshu region, during July through October is the typhoon season, but in Okinawa, which is located in the sub tropical region, May through November is the typhoon season. But many of Japan’s typhoon season are during July through October.

試験を終えて

今年の試験の印象として、日本の文化を問うよりも、秋葉原で電化製品の買い物をするときのお勧め情報や、地震や台風の時の対処方法といった実務的な質問が印象的でした。
