試験の様子

拘束時間は1:50～3:00、実際の試験は2:00～2:30の間。
　係の方から名前を呼ばれて試験室のドアの前に立った後、中から声がかかるか と思ってしばらく待ったのですが特に声はかかりませんでしたので、係の方に「入ってもよろしいでしょう か？」と尋ねてからドアをノックしました。ノックをしても特に "Come in." 等の声はかかりませんでしたが（言っていたのかもしれませんが、試験室の外には聞こえませんでした）、しかたがないので自分でドアを開け、 "Hello." 「失礼いたします。」とネイティブ試験官・日本人試験官両方に挨拶をして中に入りました。部屋に入ると向かって左側に日本人女性、右側に外国人女性 （見た感じではイギリス人・アメリカ人ではなさそうだった）。2人しかいな かったので、「あれ？」と思ったが、3人いるよりはアイコンタクトもしやすく、話しやすかったと思う。

質問内容

（以下、J：日本人試験官、N：ネイティブ試験官、A：受験者）

N: How are you today?

A: I’m very fine. Just the same as today’s weather.

N: （返答を受けてみんなで窓の外を見て少し談笑、その後） Tell me your name. Where do you live?

A: My name is... I live in...

N: What is rainy season?

A: In Japan, we have rainy season called tsuyu. It’s from the middle of June to the middle of July. （日本全国そうというわけではないから言い直さなくてはと思ったが、「太平洋側」が英語でとっさに出てこず） But it’s just for this side of Japan.（ジェスチャーで） I mean, the east side of Japan, ... No, I mean, not on the Japan sea side and in Hokkaido. （苦し紛れのしどろもどろの説明になってしまったが、先方が助け舟。）

N: So, you mean there is no rainy season in Hokkaido?

A: Yes. but there are lots and lots of snow in Hokkaido in winter.

N: Tell me about Okinawa and Hokkaido.

A: Okinawa is a very warm, tropical area. The fashion, language, food, drink... everything is different from the main islands of Japan. It is because, Okinawa was originally a different country.

N: What did it belong to?

A: It used to be an independent country. Hokkaido is cold and has a lot of snow.

N: What kind of fish do you think is the most popular in Japan?

A: Well, there are many kinds of fish we eat..., but I think mackerel is very reasonable so many people use it for cooking.

N: What else?

A: Well, tuna and sardine are popular.

N: Which do you like most?

A: I like tuna. It’s easy to cook.

N: Tell me about fugu.

A: （フグの発音が聞き取れず） Pardon?

N: I’ve heard that it has a poison in its body.

A: Yes. Because of the poison, only a licensed cook can prepare it, and it may be one reason that fugu is expensive. But, it is delicious.

N: What has changed after the Meiji Restoration?

A: After the Meiji Restoration, Japan was modernized. Japanese became Westernized while discarding good Japanese traditions including kimono.

N: Is there any other change?

A: The national seclusion ended and Japan started trading with other countries. As a result, Japan became internationalized. （今考えると「主権が将軍から天皇に移った」ことを言わせたかったと思われる。）

N: Why can’t we get into onsen with our costumes on?

A: I don’t exactly know the answer, but I’ve heard that one of the reasons is that costumes and towels will be damaged by the ingredents of onsen water, so they are not allowed... But I suppose foreign travelers may be embarrassed.

N: Tell me about three characters you use when you write.

A: Kanji came from China, and Hiragana and Katakana are characters simplified from Kanji. Katakana are used for describing foreign words.

N: That’s all. Thank you.

A: I was a bit nervous, but I was happy to talk with you today. Thank you very much. （両方の試験官に挨拶し、 “Good-bye.” 「失礼いたします」と言って、お辞儀をしてから部屋を出る。）
