試験の様子

京都会場
　試験官は女性2人
　J1：年齢40代半ばの感じの日本人女性試験官、主な質問者。
　J2：年齢50歳前後の日本人女性試験官、恰幅がなかなか良い。冒頭に氏名、住所を聞いた。

質問内容（日本語で再現）

（以下、J1,J2：日本人試験官、N：ネイティブ試験官、A：受験者）

J2: May I ask your name?

A: My name is …. （大きな声で元気よく答えた。）

J2: Where are you from?

A: I am from …. （両試験官ともホーというような嘆声を上げる。）

J1: Where do you think is good for skiing in Japan?

A: Oh, Hokkaido is very good for skiing.

J1: Why do you recommend Hokkaido?

A: You know, it’s powder snow in Hokkaido …. （powder snowではなく、powdery snowというべきであったか？自分自身スキーをしたことが無く、また遠隔の地である北海道に関する関連情報が続いて出てこず、愛想不足であった。）

J1: If I go to Osaka from Tokyo, how can I go?

A: You can go by plane or by shinkansen.

J1: What is shinkansen?

A: It’s Super Express Train, or Bullet Train.

J1: Can I go by any other way?

A: Well, you can go by expressway bus called kosoku-basu.

J1: Which is the cheapest way, plane, shinkansen or bus? And how much does it cost?

A: I think bus is cheapest. The fare is about one thousand yen….

J1, 2: One thousand!?

A: Sorry, it’s ten thousand, or twelve thousand, I’m not sure though. （緊張のせいか、完全にトチッテしまった。）

J1: In the Edo period, ….. What people were there other than samurai? （突然、話題が変わった。E1はうつむき加減でメモを見ながらの質問で、かなり聴き取り辛い。）

A: Well, there were four classes in the Edo period. The top class was samurai class. Then, farmers class and craftsman class. The lowest but richest class was merchant class. （単数、複数の統一が駄目だった。CELの教材のどこかで勉強した記憶があったためか、craftsman classが出てきたときには両試験官が大きく頷いていた。また、The lowest but the richest class….. の部分でとっさに思いついたrichestにE1が反応して笑顔を見せてくれた。

J1: That’s ……… all for today’s interview. Thank you for coming.

A: Thank you. I really enjoyed talking with you.

試験を終えて

主に質問を発した女性試験官も欧米系のnativeではなく、日本人であったと思う。CELから送られてきたCD-ROM二次試験教材に出てくるnativeのような丁寧かつ明瞭な音声による発問ではなかった。ほとんどの質問がメモの読み上げのような形でなされ、関連質問による会話の展開という方向もあまり感じられなかった。また、私の場合、面接時間が5分少々で聞いていた話しより短かかったが、これは吉？or凶？
