質問内容

(以下、J:日本人試験官、N:ネイティブ試験官、A:受験者)

N: Good morning.

A: Good morning. Please sit down.

J: Could you give me your name?

A: My name is ...

J: Where are you from?

A: I live in ...

N: I 'd like to go to snow ski slopes. Where should I go?

A: Absolutely Nagano. Nagano is the host city of Nagano winter Olympic games in 1998. There are lots of ski slopes in the area. The variety of slopes suits every level of skiers. And when you climb up to top of the mountains, you can see a spectacular panoramic view. It’s excellent.

N: Isn't it cold?

A: Yes, it’s very cold. But every ski area has rental snow suits and gears for skiing and snowboarding. Even foreign tourists, you can rent it. Don’t worry about it.

N: What is the temperature? Do you know?

A: Yes, in the mountain area, up to 3 or 5.

N: Really? Very cold-----above 0?

A: Yes, but in the morning, it’s below 0. But in such climate, air is also clear. You can see great scenery far away (broken English).

N: Sounds great! Why does Japan have lots of hot springs?

A: It is mainly because it’s by-products of volcanoes. Japan is a mountainous country and we have lots of volcanoes. Such hot springs are very popular, because it is very cold in winter in Japan. But as long as we have hot springs, we are very happy!

N: Oh, sounds good. Is there any active volcano in Japan?

A: Yes, one of typical examples is Mt. Asama. It creates smoke even now. But it’s quiet now. Several years ago, it erupted a little and sprinkled a little ashes around the area. But now, it only creates a little smoke you can see. It’s very interesting.

N: Where is it?

A: It is located at the border of Nagano prefecture and Gunma prefecture. It takes about an hour from Tokyo by bullet train.

N: I know samurai lived in the Edo period. Could you tell me other people who lived in the Edo period?

A: Samurai is the top of the hierarchy of the Syogunate system. The second place is farmers. But they suffered from paying taxes by rice. The third is the people living in the Edo town. The town of Edo was a big city. The population was one million------oh, sorry there was one more between farmer and merchant. “Master” (I should have said “ craftsmen”) are the third. They worked for manufacturers or industries. They made ceramic wares, lacquer wares and so on.

N: What is the biggest car maker in Japan?

A: It’s Toyota. Toyota car manufacturer is located in Toyota city, Aichi prefecture.

Many people living in the city work for Toyota. They have many branches all over the world. And they produce more than 2 million cars annually.

N: I’d like to see Mt. Fuji. Where is the good place to see it and how should I go?

A: My favorite place is Ashinoko lake. It’s close to Hakone hot spring resort. It takes less than an hour from Tokyo by bullet train and you should get off at Odawara. When you reach Odawara, Hakone is very close from there. On a fine day, the almost perfect cone shape of Mt. Fuji and its reflection on the surface of the lake are very beautiful and magnificent!

(N asked J, “OK?” and J nodded.)

N: Thank you very much. That’s all.

A: Oh, thank you very much. Have a nice day.

N: You too.

試験を終えて

Most questions are ones I prepared. I was be able to keep smiling. However, I think I got little nervous even tough I enjoyed the conversation with examiners. I made some mistakes. I hope they will not be fatal injuries.
