試験の様子

試験会場: 首都圏大学 南大沢キャンパス

試験時刻: 16時-16時半

受付時刻: 15時-15時半

試験前: その時間帯の一番初めだったので、教室の前まで連れて行かれて、そのまま教室へ入ることに。試験官は2名: 外国人男性(アクセントからアメリカ人と思われる。30代後半位?)、日本人女性(50代くらい)

基本的に外国人の男性が質問などをして、日本人の女性は話を聞くという様子だった。両名ともとてもフレンドリーな優しい雰囲気。厳しい感じの面接官を勝手に想像していたので、入った瞬間笑顔で迎えられていい意味でびっくり。おかげでとてもリラックスした和やかな雰囲気で面接は進んでいった。基本的に外国人男性のみが質問をした。(日本人女性は笑顔で頷くという感じ)

質問内容

（以下、J：日本人試験官、N：ネイティブ試験官、A：受験者）

A: Hello, nice to meet you. Oh, do I need to show my cards? (受験カードの様なものを渡されていたので)

N: No. Please have a seat. Nice to meet you. What is your name?

A: My name is .… Nice to meet you, too.

N: How are you today?

A: I am fine, well. I am a little nervous and excited. But I am very fine, thank you. And you?

N: I am fine, too. Thank you.

I know Japanese like flowers. But why cherry blossom is so special for Japanese people?

A: Well, cherry blossom is very special flower for Japanese people. Cherry blossom is the symbol flower in spring. And spring is very special season for Japanese people. In April, schools start and companies’ fiscal year also start. So spring is the season to start new lives for Japanese. And cherry blossom is the most special flower for spring. Cherry blossom is only in full bloom from the end of March to the beginning of April, just for two weeks. It is just a short period of time. So when I see cherry blossom, I always feel the spring comes this year. And Japanese have cherry blossom viewing party to enjoy beautiful cherry blossom. People have the parties with their friends or colleagues and enjoy eating, drinking and chatting with friends under cherry blossom trees. That is very fun. I am a drinking person, so I really enjoy the parties.

N: Who is the most important foreigner who visited Japan in Japanese history?

A: There are some important foreign visitors in the Japanese history. But I think Francisco Xavier would be one of the most important foreign visitors in the Japanese history. He was the first person who introduced Christianity into Japan in the 16th century. He was Portuguese. And he was a member of catholic group in Paris. He traveled over the Asia to introduce Christianity and visited Japan in the 16th century. He is very famous and important because he introduced Western culture to Japan for the first time.

N: How long did he stay in Japan?

A: I am not quite sure how long exactly he stayed in Japan. But according to my memory, he stayed in Japan for two or three years and visited other Asian countries after Japan. Although his stay was not long, many Westerners started visiting Japan after his arrival.

N: Thank you. Very good answers.

Why did samurai warriors carry two swords?

A: Oh, do you mean samurai carried two swords? (with gesture)

N: Yeah … (laugh)

A: Oh yes, that is a very tough question. I am afraid that I can not give you exact, I mean, a correct answer to your question. But I can guess. Well, the meaning of carrying two swords was different in the time of the history. For example, in the 15th and 16th century, Japan had a civil war period. During the time, samurai warriors often fought against samurai warriors of different groups to expand their territory. So at the time, samurai thought to carry extra swards would be good to protect themselves. To carry two swards was more protective than just one sword. I know there would be more reasons for samurais to carry two swords, but my answer would be one possible reason for the question.

N: Yeah, I know this is a tough question. I don’t even know the answer, too, hahaha. Oh yeah. I think that is all. Excellent.

A: Well, thank you for your time today. And have a good evening.

N: Thank you.

試験を終えて

試験を終えて近くの席に案内されると私が一番初めに終わったようだった。確かに試験はアレ?これだけ?というくらいスムーズに短く終わったかも。試験後控え室に通される。そこでは同じ時間帯の人たちの面接が終わるまで待たなければいけないということ。携帯も電源を必ず切って机の上に置いて下さいとなかなか厳しい。担当者いわく、同じ質問をこの時間帯は使っているので質問内容がこの時間の最後の面接が終わるまで漏れては困るということらしい。なるほど。食べ物は引き続き禁止だが、飲み物は飲んでいいとのことでした。

面接中に面接官とのやりとりでの手ごたえと、自分の回答と思い返して、まずまずの結果が期待できるのでは…と思いました。Dan先生にとても厳しく鍛えられたおかげか(笑)、面接の質問内容はさほど難しく感じず、いつもどおりに笑顔で落ち着いてできたと思います。侍が何故2本刀と持っているのか?という質問には、面接官も｢僕も知らないなー｣なんて笑って言っていたくらいなので、細かい正確な知識をどれくらい持っているかということよりも、知らないことを聞かれたときに、自分の持っている他の知識でどれくらい知らないことを補って興味深い回答ができるか、というそういう部分を見ていているのかと思いました。余談ですが、回りの人は男性ならほとんどの人がスーツ、女性もスーツに近い服装だったので、ニットにスカートにブーツの私は(いちおうOL風のきれいめでしたが、、、)やや浮いていました(笑)。あれれ、気合が足りなかったか…。しまった、ジャケットくらい着ておけばよかったか…、なんて余計なことを試験前に考えていたせいか、あんまり緊張せずにすんだような気がします…。(笑)

最後に一言。南大沢は遠いです…。なので、帰りに駅前のアウトレットに立ち寄って買い物をして帰りました。
