A: (ドアをノックして) Good afternoon!

N: Good afternoon or … good evening.

N: Please sit down.

A: Thank you.

J: First, could you tell us your name and address?

A: OK. My name is .… I am from Yamagata prefecture.

J: Are you from Yamagata?? Did you come to Tokyo today?

A: Yes, I arrived in Tokyo this morning. It takes about 3 hours by Shinkansen.

J: Are you going to stay in Tokyo tonight?

A: No, I’m going home.

N: Would you mind if I ask you some questions about Japan?

A: No. Sure.

N: People often talk about Hakone. Tell me about Hakone. What is it?

A: Hakone is in Kanagawa prefecture. This place is very famous for hot spring resorts. It is located near Mt. Fuji, and it is in the Fuji Hakone Izu National Park.

N: Hot springs…. What is a hot spring?

A: (ここで質問を真に受けてしまいWhat is Onsen? じゃなくてWhat is a hot spring?

Well, hot springs are natural hot water …There are many hot springs in Japan. Japanese people have enjoyed hot springs from old times.

N: So, you mean Japanese go to hot springs and just soak themselves in hot water?

A: Ye…s…

N: Ok. Next. Tell me what Yamagata is like. Where is it?

A: Ok. Yamagata is in the Tohoku district, northern part of the main island. It is about 300 km away from Tokyo and takes about three hours by Shinkansen. Yamagata is blessed with the beauty of nature. It has the Zao mountain range in the east, and the Bandai Asahi National Park in the west. Oh, Zao is also famous for hot springs.

N: OK. Now, I heard that in Aizu in Fukushima, young people killed themselves a long time ago. What happened?

N: OK. How is Japan’s economy?

A: Japan is in depression, but I think it will be improved. Japan has high technology and our products such as electronics and automobiles are very popular and world-famous now. So, I think with this technology, we will overcome the situation.

N: OK. Now you are guiding some foreign tourists. A big earthquake happened. The tourists are crying, a baby and children are also crying and they are all in a panic. They are going to run away. What do you say?

A: Run Away??

Well, if I were their tour guide, I would explain about the earthquake in advance …

N: Yeah, but you know, it’s happening RIGHT NOW!! Look! I’m crying. No way! I don’t want to die!! …What are you going to do?

A: Please calm down! You’ll be all right. Earthquakes often happen in Japan. Please do not worry.

N: But you know, this is a BIG earthquake!! I want to go home!

A: OK. Please protect yourself under a table or …safe area like bathroom…(?) Please don’t run out!! Calm down!

N: OK. I think that’s all of my questions. Do you have any?

J: No. I don’t think I have.

A: Thank you very much.

N: Thank you very much.
