A: (ドアをノックして) Good afternoon.

J: Good afternoon. Have a seat. What is your name?

A: My name is ….

J: Where do you live?

A: I live in Kita Ward which is close to Saitama prefecture.

N: How did you come here and how long did it take?

A: I came here by train, Nanboku Line and it took just 20 minutes.

N: Oh, you are very lucky.

A: Yes, I am.

N: I’m a tourist and you are a tour guide. I am interested in gardens. Where would you recommend and why?

A: I recommend Koishikawa-Korakuen. It is a Japanese garden located in Tokyo, near Korakuen station. This time of the year, the falling leaves are very beautiful. You can walk from here. It will take 30 or 40 minutes. It should be nice to walk in such a fine day.

N: I see. When I walk around in the town, I sometimes find curtains with red and white, or black and white. What are they?

A: We use curtains with red and white in happy occasions such as wedding and festivals and black and white curtains are used in unhappy occasions such as funeral. The color of black and white inspires …

N: You mean sad situations?

A: Yes, that’s right.

N: Can you tell me about … period?

A: Pardon?

N: Can you tell me about Nara period?

A: Nara period began in 710 by Emperor Shomu. (言ったあとに間違いに気づくが時すでに遅し) It was located Nara prefecture, we still call it. In Nara period, many Japanese cultures were developed especially in Buddhism. For example, many important Buddhist statues were made and they can be seen in such as Horyuji Temple.

N: O.K. Why the Imperial Palace was called Edo castle?

A: In Edo period, the shogun lived there and the imperial family lived in Kyoto. That’s way it was called Edo castle. But when Edo period finished, the capital of Japan changed into Edo, we call it Tokyo now, and the imperial family moved from Kyoto and lived in Edo castle. So now we call it the Imperial Palace.

N: Where the Imperial family lived in Kyoto?

A: They lived in Kyoto Gosho. Gosho is usually not opened for public but opens 2 or 3 times of the year. You can go in only when it opens.

N: O.K. I see. Dose the imperial family sometimes go back there?

A: I don’t think so.

N: I am just curious. So why do you want to be a tour guide? Which season do you think it best to tour Nagano?

A: Because I had many chances to go abroad so far for business and sightseeing. I met many people there and they were very good to me all the time. I like the countries I have visited because I had a lot of good memory with them. So next is my turn. I want to introduce my country to people come to Japan. And also, now I am working in a university as a staff for international students. I am often asked about Japanese culture by students. The knowledge for a tour guide will help me for my job as well.

N: What are you hobbies?

A: I like running. But now I am 7-month pregnant so I cannot run. I will start it again as soon as I give a birth.

A: Thank you very much.
