質問内容

(以下、J:日本人試験官、N:ネイティブ試験官、A:受験者)

J&N: Good morning.

A: Good morning.

J: May I have your name?

A: My name is ….

J: Where are you from?

A: I’m from Kawasaki City.

N: Do you mean you live there or were you born there?

A: I live there. I was born in Kobe.

N: Oh, I’ve been to Kobe. How would you describe Kobe?

A: It’s an international city, and… the balance between the number of facilities and the population is good so it’s not so crowded.

N: Have you ever lived overseas?

A: Yes, I have.

N: Where did you live?

A: In San Francisco and in New York.

N: Oh, nice places. Now, let me ask you a question. What do you think about TV programs in Japan? Do you watch TV?

A: No, I don’t watch TV so much.

N: Oh, why not?

A: Because I don’t like the variety shows.

N: Why not?

A: Well, I don’t think they are planned very well. I would like to watch something more umm, sophisticated or something planned more carefully.

N: Okay. Now, next question.

I hear that the Meiji era was very important. How was it important?

A: Umm, Japan was a very closed country until the Meiji restoration, and after that, we opened up and adopted many Western things and advanced technology, such as ship building, medicine, railroads, and weaponry. Such developments made it possible for Japan to be… not equal but almost equal to those countries, like the US or European countries.

N: I see. Do you think it is necessary for Japan to open up more?

A: Oh yes. The world is becoming smaller and smaller so we really need to open up. In a way, Japan is a little inward type of country, but with globalization, I think it is necessary to open up more.

N: Okay. Now next question.

I want to go to an onsen. Where would you recommend?

A: Well, there are many great onsen resorts in Japan…. so….

N: Okay. Let’s say a one day trip.

A: I suppose I would recommend going to Hakone. There are many good onsen there.

N: I see. Well, I haven’t tried an onsen before. What kind of advice would you give me?

A: First, please ask for a towel at the counter, and the baths are segregated so please do not make a mistake and go into the women’s. If you can’t tell which is which, ask the clerk. Then go in, wash yourself thoroughly and then soak in the bath, but don’t soak your towel in the bath.

N: So you seem to like onsen a lot.

A: Yes, very much!

N: Which onsen do you like?

A: I like Tenzan. Oh, I also like Himesharano-yu.

N: Okay. That’s all. Thank you.

A: Thank you very much.

(部屋を出る時にThank you. Goodbye.
