(以下、J:日本人試験官、N:ネイティブ試験官、A:受験者)

A: (ドアをノックして)Good morning.

J: Good morning.

N: Good morning.

A: (入って右手に荷物を置くためのデスクがあったので)

May I put my bag on?

J: Sure. Have a seat. What is your name and where do you live?

A: My name is ... and I live in ….

J: Very far.

N: Let me ask you a few questions about Japan. How is the climate in Japan?

A: Japan has clear cut four seasons. Spring, summer, fall and winter.

(夏には湿度が高く、冬には太平洋側と日本海側では気候が異なることを言おうと思って少し考えていると)

N: Which season do you like the best?

A: I like winter the best. Because I like to see snow falling.

N: What the advantages of traditional Japanese buildings?

A: They have wide slide doors. If it’s hot, we can open the doors and feel breeze. Also Japanese houses are very flexible. It’s easy to be modified. For example, if a new baby was born, or the number of the family member increased, we can build a new room and add it to the old house.

N: Still now, all the Japanese houses are made of wood?

A: No, there are so many concrete houses.

N: Why do you eat sea bream in happy occasions?

A: Because the fish has red skin. In Japan, the combination of red and white is considered as a symbol of happiness. That’s the reason why we eat the fish in the happy occasion such as wedding ceremony.

N: What is “sankinkotai”?

A: In Edo period, Japan was divided into many regions. Each region has it’s own landlord (feudal lord と言うべきだった). But shogun tried to dominate whole Japan. So, to prevent them from becoming rebellious, and to watch on them, shogun ordered them to come to Edo regularly and stay there in certain period. We call the practice “sankinkotai”.

N: How do you elect the prime minister in Japan?

A: We can’t take part in the election. If I become a member of a political party, I may be able to vote on a candidate. In the case of Liberal Democratic Party, several people run for the prime minister. Then, inside the party, one person is elected as a party leader. In the Diet, there are several candidates from different parties. All the Diet members vote them. Almost always the party leader of ruling party becomes the new prime minister.

N: Before you told me that you like snow. Where can I see snow?

A: You mean you go skiing?

N: No, just I go to see snow.

A: There are a lot of places. But the nearest one is “Gala Yuzawa”. It’s a Shinkansen station. To go there, it takes only 75 minutes from Tokyo. Not only seeing snow, but also you can enjoy skiing.

N: Thank you for your useful information.

A: You’re welcome.

N: It’s all for today. Thank you very much. Enjoy your lunch.

A: Thank you very much.
