*試験官の印象
通訳ガイド(?) 30代後半と思われる日本人女性 (時折何か書いていたが、終始にこやか)
ネイティブ 30代半ばくらいのセイン・カミユ似のアメリカ人(?)男性 (標準的な英語だったが、声が小さくなって聞きづらいときがあった)
*試験の流れ
受け付け開始時間より30分ほど早かったので飲み物を購入して、指示された手前の待合室(階段状になった数百人は入れそうな講堂のような部屋)で待機。
2時からの試験時間の受験者が呼び出され、固まって受付へ。受付を済ませた後、すぐ横の大教室に入り、受付で手渡された名刺大のカードに記載されている番号の座席で、机上にあった注意書きを読んだり参考書を読んだりしながら再び待機。(ここから携帯等通信機材の使用は禁止)
試験時間が近づくと、全ての荷物を持参するように指示され、カード番号で10人位に振り分けられて1階上の試験会場へ移動。試験会場の手前のラウンジで3人ずつテーブルに分かれて座り、前のグループが終わるのを待つ。
名前が呼ばれて、いよいよ試験会場へ。
質問内容
（以下、J：日本人試験官、N：ネイティブ試験官、A：受験者）
入り口でノックをして入るように言われ、その指示に従ってノックすると、“Please come in”. との声。ドアを開けるとすぐに、
N & J: Good afternoon!”
A: Good afternoon!
(と微笑みながら会釈し、｢荷物置き場｣という紙が貼ってある机の上にバッグとジャケットを置く。すぐに席に座ってしまってから、”May I have a seat?”くらい言えば良かったと後悔。そして、座った途端)
J: How are you?
A: I’m very fine, because I got beautifully colored leaves on my way to the station. (と言って、ポケットからお守り代わりに持っていた銀杏の葉っぱを取り出してみせると、NJともに微笑む)
J: What’s your name and where do you live?
A: My name is … and I live in … in Saitama prefecture.
N: Is it far from here?
A: No. Not far. (とっさにこう答えた後、長時間電車に乗ってきたことを思い出し、慌てて) … Oh, it’s too far. It takes about 2 hours from here. I have to take Saikyo Line from … station to Shinjuku and transfer…
N: To Keio Line.
A: Yes.
N: Are there any big shrines or temples in Saitama?
A: Yes, there are. Omiya Hikawa Shrine is one of the biggest shrines in Saitama, in my neighborhood. It’s one of the oldest shrines in Musashi country. (と言ったものの武蔵の国はcountryで良かったのか少々不安になる) the west of Kanto area … the northwest … (言い直そうとしていると …)
N: In shrines and temples, there are a lot of pebbles on the grounds. Why are there so many pebbles?
A: (よく聞き取れなかったので) Pebbles?
N: Yes, pebbles. (と言いながら、指で小さな丸を作って見せてくれる)
A: I think that owing to the pebbles, people have to walk slowly on the way to the main hall. (何だか的外れなことを言ってしまった!)
N: Are there many pebbles in Meiji Shrine?
A: I think so. (しばらく行っていないので、記憶が曖昧)
N: Where is Meiji Shrine?
A: Where? (Nが頷いたので) Meiji Shrine is near Shinjuku … near Harajuku Station.
N: Near Yoyogi Park?
A: Yes. It is worshiped Emperor Meiji. Meiji Shrine is one of the most popular shrines on New Year Holidays. People visit … (first visit to shrines と続けるのはおかしいと思って躊躇っているとNがしきりに鐘をつく動作をしてみせたので) and ring the bell.
N: On New Years Eve, people listen to the bell ring 108 times. Why 108 times?
A: Because 108 is the number of worldly sins. People listen to the bell to drive away 108 worldly sins.
N: We talked about shrines and temples. Now tell me about portable shrines.
A: It is believed that during the festival in honor of the deities, the deities rest in the portable shrines. People carry the portable shrines and hang out the community, neighborhood.
N: Why do they so?
A: To give the power of the God.
N: I see. Good. (と言いながら、隣のJの方を見ると、Jがもう少しという反応をしたので) One more? What is the difference between shrines and temples?
A: The big difference between shrines and temples is that shrines have a open gate called “Torii”, while temples have a closed gate, doors. Shrines … Temples have graveyard and pagoda in the grounds. (Jの方を見ると何か物足りなそうな顔をしていたので、大事なことを言い忘れていることに気付いて) Shrine is a building of Shintoism and temple is a building for Buddhism.
N: (微笑みながら) That’s all. Thank you.
A: Thank you very much. どうも有り難うございました。 (と頭を下げて言い終わった途端、自分でも信じられなかったが、勝手に身体がNの方に動いて、いつの間にか銀杏の葉っぱを差し出して) This is a gift for you.
N: Oh, thank you.
A: You are welcome.
N: Do you know the name of the tree?
A: Yes. Gingko tree.
N: Thank you.
A: Thank you. どうも有り難うございました。(と言って後ろのドアを見ると｢締め切り｣と書いてあったので、入ってきたドアから再び退場。NJともにこやかに見送ってくれた。)
試験を終えて
出口で待ちかまえていた女性に案内されて反対側のラウンジへ。
10人ほど集まったところで、また階上の広い部屋へ移動。 指定された座席の机上には、注意書きと合格通知についてのプリントが置かれ、全員が揃うまで待つように言われる。
飲み物を飲む事は許されていたが、ここでも他の受験者とのオシャベリや通信機器の使用は禁じられていたので、かなり退屈。係の男性が気を遣って試験会場の事や南大沢の事など色々話してくれたので、多少は気が紛れた。
階下はまだ試験中なので、立ち寄らないように注意された後、3時過ぎに、やっと解放！
