試験の様子

試験官：ネイティブ男性（４０代？）、日本人男性（３０代）の２名。

質問内容

（以下、J：日本人試験官、N：ネイティブ試験官、A：受験者）

J：（廊下に出てきて名前を確認し）○○さんですね、どうぞ（日本語で）
　 Please have a seat and put your luggage.

A: Good afternoon.

N+J: Good afternoon.

N: Could you introduce yourself?

A: Yes. My name is ..... I live in Minato Ward, Tokyo.

J: You are from Tokyo. But you chose Kyoto?

A: Actually, I'd been living in Hyogo Prefecture for eight years, and I moved to Tokyo in September.
（ここで次に移るかと思ったら、試験官が黙ったままなので､自己紹介を続けるべきと気づき・・・）
I am a translator by profession. I usually translate English documents into Japanese or Japanese documents into English.

N: Well, （このあたりの言葉は記憶なし）I have one day in Tokyo. Where would you take me for sightseeing?

A: If you are interested in traditional aspects of Tokyo, I would like to take you to Asakusa, where you can visit Sensoji Temple, and also there are many long-established stores there. If you are interested in modern aspects of Tokyo, I would like to take you to Shinjuku, Shibuya, or Ginza. I think Tokyo is a city of contrast, and you can enjoy both traditional aspects and modern aspects.
(言いながら変だと思いつつaspectsという単語ばかり出てきてしまい、まとまりなく終わってしまった）

N: Japan has four distinct seasons. How would you explain it to foreigners?

A: Japan is an island, and there are three major ocean currents flowing around the Japanese archipelago, and that makes Japan's four seasons distinctive from each other. Every season has its own attractions.
（以下、あまりうまくできませんでしたので質問のみで失礼します）

N: Could you explain Judo?

N: What's Kabuki?

N: Why Kabuki is performed by male actors only?（私がそう説明したのを受けて）

N: What's Noh?

N: What's Giri？

N: What do you think about the current world economic slump? (slumpという言葉でなかったかもしれません)

N: Thank you.

試験を終えて

どの質問も、ある程度は答えたのですが、すべて中途半端になってしまいました。質問は簡単だったのに、肝心な説明の抜けばかり。準備不足でした。

「四季」の質問では、春夏秋冬のそれぞれを説明しないまま終わってしまいました。「歌舞伎」の質問では、衣装や題材についての説明が抜けました。「能」の質問では、stylized と言いたかったに stylish と言ってしまいました。「義理」の質問では、「義理と人情とセットでよく使う」と説明しておきながら「ninjo」の説明をしないまま「義理」の説明に進んでしまいました。

ネイティブの試験官は最初から最後までずっと紙を読みながら機械的に質問をしており、私の返答に対しては何も聞き返してくれませんでした。一方日本人の試験官はにこやかにうなずきながら聞いてくれました。
