試験の様子
13:25集合、13:55移動、14:20本番開始。試験官は、アメリカ人と思われる男性(30代）、日本人女性（50代、とても感じのいい方）の2名。
質問内容
A:(ドアをノックして）Good afternoon.
J: Good afternoon. (鞄をとなりの椅子に置いている間に)How are you today?
A: I'm fine, but a little nervous.
J: Have a seat.
A: Thank you.
J: What's your name? And where are you from?
A: My name is ………and I live in ………City which is in the western part of Tokyo.
J: I see. He will ask you some questions. (となりの外国人試験官を見る) OK?
A: OK.
N: I heard that Japanese people learn English at school. But why aren’t they able to talk?
A: In Japan, students learn English 3 years in Junior High Schools, 3 years in Senior High Schools, and 2 years in universities. And from this year, the 5th and the 6th graders of elementary school are taught English. But for public schools, English is taught only 3 hours a week, and for elementary school, only an hour a week. That is not enough to improve English.
N: If I ask Japanese in English, can they answer me? How many people do you think can answer me?
A: Most of them can't answer fluently, but I hope about 30% of them can answer in a word with gesture. (自分で勝手に30％と言ってしまい、どう続けようかとかなり焦ってしまいました。) For example, if you ask them "Shinjuku?", they might answer like "This train" or "Staight" (一生懸命身振り手振りで)
N: Oh, 30%? Really?
A: I hope so. (言ってしまった以上、HOPEを強調するしかありませんでした)
N: Next question. I want to go to Hiroshima for a day. What would you recommend?
A: I would recommend Itsukushima Shrine, which is one of the World Heritage Site and one of the three best scenic spots in Japan. The huge torii gate, the entrance of a shrine, is famous. It is built in the sea and looks like it's floating in the sea during high tide.
N: Is the shrine floatng, too?
A: The shrine and the torii gate aren’t floating, they just look like floating in the sea. And for another place…(「広島で一日」と言われていたので)Hiroshima was the 1st place to be attacked by the atomic bomb at the end of WW2. There is a museum called Hiroshima Memorial Museum which shows the history of Hiroshima and the threat of the atomic bomb.
N: Am I welcome? (予想もしない質問にドキリ！)
A:Of course, you are welcome.
N: Next is … what is pachinko? And why is it noisy?
A: Pachinko is a kind of combination machine of a slot machine and a
pinball machine . (景品引き換えの事を言うのを忘れました)The noisy sound might be caused by the steel balls. You manipulate a steel ball
to make it go into a hole, and then some or many steel balls come out. And the music is also too noisy.
N: In rock concert the sound is noisy, but why is the music noisy in pachinko?
A: That might be … to stimulate the player. (後で考えると「何を刺激するの？」と思いました。音の大きい理由はわからないので、切り替えました) I have once played pachinko, but it was really noisy and smoky inside. And I lost the game, so it was my first and the last to play pachinko. (試験官の方々が笑ってくれたので、取り敢えずホッとしました)
N: Um … Smoky? You can smoke?
A: Yes.
N: Is there a non-smoking area in pachinko?
A: As I said before, I have only played once, so I'm not sure about it. ( 実
はパチンコはしたことがなく、主人の受け売りでしたので、何しろこの話
題から逃げたかった)
J: では、日本語で質問させて頂きますので、日本語でお答えください。
あなたはどのように外国の方と接したいですか？
A: ほとんどの外国人の方にとって、私が…試験に合格できましたらですが、最初に合う日本人となると思いますので、私の印象で日本の印象が変わると思います。ですので、親しみやすく、広い心を持って接したいと思います。また、日本の知識も増やしていきたいと思います。(最後の文は質問の答えになっていないとあとで気づきました。)
J: では試験を終わります。お気をつけてお帰り下さい。
A: ありがとうございました。Thank you very much.
A: もう一度部屋を出るときにThank you very much.
試験を終えて
試験室の外で待機している間、試験官同士が朗らかに話しているのが聞こえ、
「雰囲気がよさそう！」と多少気持ちが楽になりました。8分の試験と聞いておりましたが、あっという間に終わってしまい、思い返してみると果たして上記のように答えたのか(答えたような気がするのですが…)心配になってまいりました。Intensive Courseや家で練習している時は、日本語で考えて英語に変換しているようなところがありましたが、試験中は何語で考えていたのかも覚えていないほど、早く終わってしまいました。
通訳ガイドの試験勉強をすればするほど、日本人でありながら、如何に日本を知らないかを痛感致しました。Intensive Courseで教えて下さった先生方の方がたくさん御存じで、日本人として恥ずかしく感じました。一方、この勉強を通して、旅してみたいところ、観てみたい仏像などたくさんありますので、そのうち訪れたいと思っております。
結果はともかく、楽しく勉強できたことが何よりもよかったと思います。
