The nijiri-guchi is the small entrance to a tea room. Its size is about 60cm in every direction, though slightly longer vertically. To enter a tea room, all the guests, regardless of their wealth or power, have to bow, by which it is thought they become equal in the tea room.

In the Edo Period, Japan's feudal government, or bakufu, adopted a formality code based on shin (formal), gyo (semi-casual), and so (casual). This concept is applied not only to official occasions, but also to other aspects of ordinary life. For example, in Japanese calligraphy, Chinese characters are written in the three styles of kaisho (regular), gyosho (semi-cursive), and sosho (cursive).
