A: （ドアをノックして）Good afternoon.
J: Good afternoon.
A: May I take a seat?
J: Sure. What is your name?
A: My name is ...
J: Where do you live?
A: I live in ... ... .
N: Let me ask you a few questions about Japan. Which part of Japan do you think is the best place to live?
A: It depends on the season. If in summer, I’d recommend Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan. They have no rainy season and the temperature is comfortable to live. If in winter, Okinawa is better because it is warm even in winter.
N: What if you live all seasons in one place?
A: Maybe Tokyo is the best.
N: What the worst place to live?
A: I hesitate to say this but the Sea of Japan side may be the worst because they have much snow in winter and it is very hot in summer.
N: What is the difference between yukata and kimono?
A: Yukata is casual kimono made of cotton. It is worn on such occasions as summer festivals or firework display. Kimono usually refers to high-quality Japanese outfit made of silk. People wear them on New Year holidays, or other formal occasions like wedding ceremony or funeral.
N: What is Kokugikan in Ryogoku?
A: It is the Sumo hall. Sumo is the traditional Japanese wrestling like sports. There are six Sumo tournaments. Three times in Kokugikan in Tokyo and others are held in Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka.
N: Is Sumo popular in Japan?
A: They used to be, but nowadays it is less popular because most champions are foreigners and there were incidents that some wrestlers cheated their games.
N: I have an interest in Buddhism. How did it come to Japan?
A: Buddhism originated in India. It came to Japan through China.
N: How did Japanese learned it?
A: Many monks and students were sent to China to learn Buddhism.
N: When did it first come to Japan?
A: In the sixth century.
N: What are the most favorite foods for children in Japan?
A: I think they are curry rice, hamburg and sushi.
N: Two of them are from abroad?
A: Yes, they are.
J: （合格後）どのような点に気をつけてガイド業務を行いますか？簡潔に述べてください。
A: 正確な訳と事物の背景も説明できるガイドになりたいと思います。
J: これで終了です。
A: Thank you very much.
試験を終えて
ほとんどがネイティブ試験官との面接でした。両試験官ともあまり笑みは湛えず、いまひとつな感じでした。私の解答に対して納得した感じでうなずいていただきましたが・・・。ネイティブ人試験官は、紳士的な感じで、癖の無い英語を話されたので特に聞き取りにくくはありませんでした。日本的なものを英語で説明させる問題が少なく、特に会話に詰まることはありませんでしたが、こちら側の発言が説明というより会話的な答えになってしまい、相手から促されなくとももう少し詳細に説明した方が良かったかなと反省しました。仏教はいつ伝来したかのように英語力だけでなく、知識も問う内容でしたので、答えられて良かったです。
試験当日はCELのアドバイスに従い、スーツで就職試験に臨むような感じで行きました。男性受験者ではスーツ１／３、ジャケット１／３、カジュアル１／３といった感じだったでしょうか。
