A:(ドアをノックして)Good afternoon.

J: Good afternoon. Have a seat. What is your name?

A: My name is ...

J: Where do you live?

A: I live in Meguro.

J: How did you come here?

A: I took a taxi. By train it would take much longer time.

N: Tell me about Japanese geography.

A: Japan consists of 4 major islands, Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. There are also so many small islands in Japan. The most northern main island is Hokkaido and the weather is very cold. It is more like Canada. The most western island is Kyushu and the southern part of Kyushu is very warm. Okinawa, which is one of the most southern islands, is very warm and the weather is like Hawaii.

N: Name one or two Sumo grand champions.

A: The Sumo grand champion is Hakuho. He is from Mongol and nowadays some sumo wrestlers come from not just Eastern part of Asia but also from Eastern Europe. They are stronger than most of Japanese sumo wrestlers these days.

N: Give an example of things that are a part of Japanese everyday life and originally came from foreign countries?

A: Let's see……Japanese everyday life originally coming from overseas?

N: Yes.

A: I would choose Chinese characters and Japanese letters. Before 10th century, Japan used Chinese characters although the language is different. At 10th century, Japan invented Japanese letters to reflect the language. Thus, Chinese characters are things that we use in everyday life which came from overseas.

N: What is Pachinko and why is it so noisy?

A: Pachinko is vertical type of pin ball. (with body language) When you play it well, you can get a merchandise and then the merchandise can be exchanged to money. Since it is not direct exchange to money, officially it is not considered to be a gamble. But, people can get money in the end if they win the play. So they can feel a sense of gambling and that is why it is popular. In terms of noise, the pin ball is small and you will get hundreds of balls at one time if you play it well. It is like coin machine in casinos in US and Europe. When you play it well, you get so many coins at one time and it is rather noisy. It is same thing.

N: I want to go to Hiroshima, but I only have one day. Where would you recommend?

A: I would ask your interests and recommend because Hiroshima has 2 world heritage sites, but also has good food and sports teams. I would like to arrange the visit based upon the interests. Typically, I would recommend to visit 2 world heritage sites. One is, I don't know the precise English name, but the main hall attacked by the atomic bomb. And another is Itskushima shrine. The site is also well-known for one of the three beautiful scenic sites in Japan.

N: Thank you very much.

A: Thank you very much.
