Torii is the gate to the Shinto shrines.
・It is made of two vertical poles, connected to two horizontal poles at the top.
・It divides the people’s world from the sacred world. So, by going through the torii gate, you are entering a sacred area.
・A famous torii gate is the one at the Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima, Hiroshima Prefecture. Itsukushima Shrine and its torii gate is very famous because it stands facing the ocean. When the tide is high, they look like they are floating on the water, and when the tide is low, you can actually walk to the foot of the torii gate.
・There are many shrines and temples in Japan, and you might wonder which one this one is. In that case, if you can find a torii gate at the entrance of the building, it is usually a shrine. Torii gate is a gate for a shrine, and not for a temple, so it could be a hint to find out whether you are looking at a shrine or a temple.

N: You mentioned Itsukushima Shrine. Do the boats actually go through the gate?
A: If the tide is high enough, I think they do. To go to the Itsukushima Shrine, the only way to get there is by boat, and since this is the entrance gate, if it’s possible, I think they go through the gate.

N: You also mentioned that we can walk to the foot of the gate. Wouldn’t it be muddy?
A: That’s a good question. I didn’t think about that before.
I suppose it could be muddy at times, so I suggest you wear a shoe that you don’t have to worry about getting dirty.

Japan is a volcanic country, and there are many hot springs. From the old days, people visit hot spring spas for curing illness, and for good health. In Nagano, there is a hot spring where monkeys enjoy taking baths. Today, hot spring spas in nature is very popular for the tourist from overseas.

It’s okay, we have time. Maybe you should drink water,”と言っていただき、水を飲んで何とか話せる状態に。

Native

I am very sorry, I talked with the hotel but they cannot allow people with tattoo to use the bath. It is in our culture to not allow people with the tattoo to get in a communal bath, and I would appreciate truly for your understanding.
But, I will contact the travel agency about this and ask for anything we can do for you.
There might be other communal baths where they can accept tourists with tattoos, some allow tourists if they can cover the tattooed area with something. I’d be happy to search for one, but please let me first contact the travel agency.

N: But we had informed the agency about our tattoos when we made the reservation. Why did this happen?
A: Is that so? I am deeply sorry about this.

N: Can’t we just borrow the whole place for some time? There are many of us.
A: I’m sorry we cannot do that. This place is for every other guest as well, and they can come to use the bath anytime. Sometime, there is a private bath, much smaller but can make reservation, so I will see whether there is that kind of bath here. It might cost extra money also, so please give me some time to find out.
